KHULNA CLUB HISTORY

The Khulna Club is the most prestigious and reputed club in this area of the country. The club is situated at the heart of Khulna city at 1065, Khan – A – Sabur Road, Khulna, adjacent to the river Bhairab. It is the gateway to the famous mangrove forest ‘Sundarban’ located at the bank of the Bay of Bengal and nearer to Mongla Port.

It reveals from the records Khulna Deputy Commissioner Office that the club was established in 1885 by the then foreign and local elites in association with the British administrative body over 0.51 acres of land, which was known as ‘Shahebder Club’.

 

It was acquired in the C. S. record and published on 29th June 1926 (SL. No. 34) as Shahebder Building-2 and Shabebder Club on a land measuring 0.51 acres. The Khulna Club is situated within Number-4 Tutpara Mouza, C. S. Khotian 1294-3 ,dag No. 34 recorded in the name of the public work department for and on behalf of varat samrat.

After the 1947 country partition during the Pakistan reign, correspondence was approved between Khulna club and P. W. D. for assigning their recorded land to Khulna Club for 99 years. Just before the execution of deed the club was captured by the Pakistani Army while liberation war was going on. During the 1971 Bangladesh liberation war, one storied Card-Room building of the club was used as a Military camp.
The notorious Pakistani Army people destroyed all volume / Record Books/ Bill registers of the club. By the end of the liberation war all valuable things were taken away by them including electrical goods, crockery & cutlery.

After the Independence sometimes in early 1972 few Bengali Members of the Khulna club namely Late M. A. Rashid Late M. A. Mannan and M. A. Khaleque of Daulatpur, Hamde Ali Manirul Islam, Eng. Keramat Ali Khan and few others took initiative to restore and re-start functioning the club activities slowly.
Till 2011 it was governed by Khulna Divisional Commissioner assisted by an elected body of 10 club members. In 2011 the club registered in the Joint Stock Company as Khulna Club Limited. As per present limited company organogram now club is administered by an elected body of 11 members, namely President, Vice-President and 9 Executive Committee Members. At present Khulna Club Limited has 700 members.
